New £3m housing scheme for people with learning disabilities in Bredbury, Stockport gets underway

MSV is developing a brand-new supported housing development in Bredbury, designed specifically for people with learning disabilities. The new scheme will provide much-needed, high-quality, energy-efficient homes with full support, helping more people to live independently within their community. The building has been designed to achieve an EPC A energy rating. This includes very high standards of insulation and the use of air source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water.

Located on the disused former Bredbury Civic Hall site, and in a quiet residential area, the scheme will provide 12 purpose-built homes, including four self-contained apartments. The supported scheme will have staff on site 24/7 to assist residents to live independently.

The ground floor has been designed to offer a fully accessible range of communal facilities, including a shared lounge and kitchen/diner, communal shower facilities, a dedicated laundry space and a staff office with a sleep-in room.

This was a real partnership approach to get this scheme off the ground.  Our partners Homes England, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Stockport MBC, along with MSV, have funded the project.

The scheme was tendered through Innovation Chain North, which was awarded to PLP Construction, with the design work by local architects Pozzoni Architecture.

Charlie Norman, CEO of MSV, said:

“This scheme is so important.  Not only will MSV be providing much needed new homes so people can live independently in their community (something we hold very dearly to our hearts), but we will be bringing a brownfield site back into use, one which has been subject to fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour.  We are absolutely committed to developing schemes which help the most marginalised in society and these new homes will make a massive difference to the lives of the residents – I look forward to welcoming them once the scheme is finished in March 2027.   I would like to thank our partners on this project: Stockport Council, Homes England and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority”.

Stockport Council Leader, Cllr Mark Roberts, said:

“Giving everyone in our borough the opportunity to have access to a safe, high‑quality home is at the heart of our ambition for Stockport. This development is another important step toward ensuring that people with learning disabilities can live independently, safely and confidently within their local community.”

Cllr Micheala Meikle, cabinet member for regeneration, said:

“As we continue to regenerate Stockport, inclusive schemes like this show how disused land is being transformed to support communities and improve lives for people across the borough.

“Thank you to our partners for making this happen and particularly to MSV for delivering this life-changing scheme.”
