E-bikes and scooters spark rise in vehicle fires

*On average, in 2023, the London Fire Brigade is called to an e-bike or scooter fire every two days and in 2022, they attended a total of 116 fires related to e-charging and lithium batteries. Whilst e-scooters and bikes are good for the environment and very convenient for city use, they do also pose a greater risk to tenant safety in high-rise residential buildings where they are often stored. Battery fires develop and spread so much faster than many other types of fire that having a clear and easy to access escape route is essential – a functioning smoke control system is key to providing this.

Building owners and managers have a responsibility to ensure that the properties they managed are safe and compliant. If your smoke control systems have not been regularly serviced or you are unsure of whether your building is compliant, talk to us today.

#ChargeSafe, Be Safe.

The London Fire Brigade has launched a #ChargeSafe campaign to make e-bike and scooter owners aware of the dangers of charging damaged or old lithium batteries in an attempt to raise awareness about and stop this concerning rise in fires. However, in instances when prevention is not possible, your building must be ready to deal with the rapid spread of smoke which could hinder a quick escape.
