Work underway at major development of over 200 new council homes in Moulsecoomb

Construction is advancing on the Moulsecoomb Housing and Community Hub project in Brighton, a major regeneration scheme that will deliver 222 new council homes alongside a new community hub and improved public spaces.

The project, which is being delivered by Wates Residential for Brighton & Hove City Council, has reached a key milestone with concrete frame works now underway on the first residential block.

Made up of eight residential buildings and eight family townhouses, the scheme will transform a prominent site in north Brighton and create three new streets within Moulsecoomb, reflecting the scale of the regeneration.

The first residential building is due to complete in March 2028, with the new community hub opening in September 2028 and the wider project scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

At the heart of the development will be a new community hub bringing together a library, pharmacy, GP surgery, youth facilities, adult learning provision and community café. The wider scheme will also deliver a skate park, 3G football pitch and enhanced public spaces, creating a new focal point for local services and community activity.

Construction activity continues across the site, with piling, groundworks and demolition works progressing as part of the wider regeneration programme, including the demolition of the 67 Centre and Good News Centre.

The scheme forms part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s wider housing and regeneration programme and has been shaped through extensive engagement with local residents. More than 200 people took part in consultation activities that helped inform the design of the development and community facilities.

To date, 11 work experience placements have been delivered and 43 local roles have been created through the development. Wates has also been working with local organisations, including the 67 Centre, to support initiatives that benefit the wider Moulsecoomb community.

Councillor Gill Williams, Cabinet member for Housing, said: “This development is something myself, our team and residents have been talking about, thinking about, dreaming about for so many years – I can’t quite believe I’m seeing it all coming together.

“There’s a little way to go but the new 222 council homes are homes the city desperately needs. This is going to help hundreds of people to find a place where they will live and thrive.

“I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to see it under way. There have been so many people involved in getting us here – the residents who helped shape the plans, the council team and the builders carrying on working through this heat. I want to thank everybody for making all this happen.”

Barry Williams, Regional Operations Director at Wates Residential who are leading the development, said: “Even while construction is still in its early stages, the impact of the regeneration is already being felt.

“Hearing from young local people on site about the confidence and experience they’re gaining through work placements was a powerful reminder of the opportunities a development like this can create.

“That’s exactly the kind of impact we hope to have while delivering much-needed council homes and community facilities for Moulsecoomb.”
